Our purpose and place
About the Institute
A living Appalachian permaculture school and heritage estate where traditional knowledge, practical work, community education, and modern technology meet.
What is this place?
A nonprofit learning landscape.
The Mavis Institute Co-Op is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based on more than 30 acres in Flat Top, southern West Virginia. Its campus includes Mavis Manor, an 1897 Queen Anne Victorian home, along with gardens, a food forest, animals, an apiary, streams, seasonal ponds, trails, working farm areas, and future education spaces.
The Institute is rebuilding what modern life has stripped away: fertile soil, practical skills, local wisdom, strong communities, and the confidence to shape our own future.
Permaculture is the guiding design philosophy—not only for gardens, but for land, food, education, community, technology, and everyday life.
Past and future
Continuity, not nostalgia.
Appalachian knowledge matters here because it remains useful. Modern technology matters when it serves life rather than extraction. The Institute works at the intersection of both: preserving practical wisdom, testing better patterns, and sharing what works.
Founder Doc Mavis serves as educator, farmer, storyteller, and public voice. Doc teaches permaculture as a way to design a life worth living. The Mavis Institute is the enduring nonprofit institution: the land, educational mission, programs, and organization being built to continue beyond any one person.
The Institute welcomes learners seeking gardening, permaculture, herbalism, regenerative agriculture, homesteading education, technology education, and practical life skills.
